I have some mixed feelings about this one....
I enjoyed the direction and the simplicity.
the film remains a very nice story driven plot. It keeps a simple and cool to follow thread thanks to this directors eye for a serviciable simplicity.
Its great how it covers a nice ground of character and story while keeping fairly it simple and easy to follow, its a movie i predict most everyone could use as a fun relatively forguetable thriller.
The sheriff is pretty well cast, i think everyone is. Kathy akes, regargdless of how hit or miss her charachter was written, i think its pretty reasonable to say she did amazing.
Yet as soon as i sensed where they started taking the story of the nurse it was obvious and stupid.
The storyline quickly develops into obvious reaction fuel night time storytelling nonsense.
Omg she so creepy! Omg she is gonna abuse his vulnerable position! Omg she is so unstable and unpredictable and annoying! Omg she is gonna hurt him and he cant do anything!
It wasnt natural at all, just a very movie, sentationalized portrayal of an interesting situation a person might find themselves at. Specially when it came to actually attempt a horror tone and make the nurse look creepy it was the most pathetic most unsucesful thing ever. They try hard but fail miserable on insisting that we just fear her but the film and the character are too silly to feel anything but amusement. This movie has some genuine unintentional funny parts in it. It was cringe yet absolutely hilarious. That was unexpected
The music was for the most part also guilty of this insistedness, but there is one fantastic scene where it takes the spotlight, they use a Beethoven song, it was a bit of a juxtaposition, the energy and atmosphere it brought to the scene, were incredible, definetly the highlight of this for me. The clímax sure was also something to witness.
Its also very predictable from the get go where they are gonna take these character dynamics and that she is gonna turn out to be a shallow nightime story of the worst fear of a writter when encountering an obvsesive fan. That is literally what this movie is, its very repetitive and slightly cringe.
This movie develops a fórmula. Its basically show her something mildly infurating while being completely tone deaf to drive the nerves in the main character, meanwhile intercuting to the other characters trying and failing to find him.
The mythology or fantasy or fictionism this movie offers quickly becomes very tiring and over the head. Its nonesensical fear mongered boogeyman story but for writers. Its quite self absorved. I dont ever want to hear anybody call my precious Iñarritu self absorved when stephen king has been doing this since forever and far more on the nose. Its not very present, but ts got some commentary on the publishing industry. Albeit cringe on the nose. “You want me to write a book about a horrific thing that happened to me? What spineless, money hungry monster you are, just like anybody who ever writes a biography!... Im glad that everyone is blowing me off, but i dont write for the world, i write only for myself.”
To be fair its not all reactionistic crap. There is some (actually attemped) hilarity, and interesting lines of thought, some projection hability of oh boy i should t like to be there, or sure that must hurt to be found in this myth, i lije how they really idealized on the tediousness of having límited body movement. Its all still very reaction based but whatever at least it wasnt an entirely passive experience. I might actually developed sincere empathy for our main character, played so humanly by James Caan
